Review: The Midnight Library - Matt Haig

Updated: Sep 4, 2023

“Nora’s life has been going from bad to worse. Then at the stroke of midnight on her last day on earth she finds herself transported to a library. There she is given the chance to undo her regrets and try out each of the other lives she might have lived.
Which raises the ultimate question: with infinite choices, what is the best way to live?”

My Rating: 5/5

Review;

I'm normally a thriller reader, gimme anything to do with crime and I'm there! However this book has been on my "to read" pile for a number of months and each time I've needed a new book I've passed it by.

I'm now regretting that choice, because after devouring this book in less than 24hrs, I'm left with a library shaped hole in my soul.

The book centres around Nora, who could literally be any one of us. It's clear she has many regrets in life and when she decides that life is too much to bear she takes drastic action.

Before the infinite end though, she's transported to a library filled with books written about lives that could have been.

I don't want to give any spoilers, but this book has had me thinking about how my life has turned out, and how little choices have made big changes in the way my life has been paved out in front of me.

Matt Haig's way with words is soft but striking and I haven't had a book hangover quite this bad in a long time.

Safe to say, if you need a good cathartic cry then this book is for you.
